Pop Candy Podcast: Why you should watch 'Spaced'

By Whitney Matheson

In this week's podcast, I chat with Hynes about what Spaced meant to her. (She called me while walking in a London rainstorm, so you'll hear some buses in the background until she makes it to a cafe!)

On the DVD features:

"I did the commentary with Kevin and Quentin and Diablo, who obviously, I have a huge girl crush on. She is an incredible writer."

On McG's American version of Spaced (which wasn't picked up):

"We were aped, ranally aped. It was flattering in one way, and then in another way, it was a terrible shame that they hadn't approached us. But the show didn't work out, so I'm over it."

On a possible third season of Spaced:

"Well, I would love to do more because I love the characters. But whether or not that is actually logistically possible is the question. ... We don't have the same industry as America. In Britain it almost feels like it's always pilot season, you know? You do one series maybe, and then if it's done well, you congratulate yourself and you maybe do one more series. And then because a lot of the time it's just one or two writers working, it's very difficult to generate the kind of quantity that America is capable of doing."

I hope you'll listen to the interview then check out the show. If you can't wait for the DVDs, BBC America will air a Spaced marathon Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. The marathon will rerun July 21 at 3 a.m. ET.
